At Transport 17, some of our favourite journeys are the ones that end with laughter, conversation and a very good lunch.

Each week, we collect passengers from around Fulwood, Ranmoor, Broomhill and Sandygate, bringing them together at the wonderful St Mark’s Church Lunch and Friendship Club in Broomhill.

For many of our passengers, this isn’t just a lunch outing. It’s the highlight of their week.

A Warm Welcome at St Mark’s

The Lunch and Friendship Club at St Mark’s Church is exactly what its name suggests: friendly, welcoming and full of heart.

Some members and volunteers have been part of the club for many years, creating a strong sense of continuity and belonging. But what stands out is how much effort goes into making newcomers feel just as welcome.

The kitchen team prepares superb meals, efficient, organised, yet always with time to stop and chat. Around the tables, volunteers gently draw everyone into conversation, making sure no one feels left out. It’s not just about food. It’s about friendship.

More Than Just Lunch - A Friendship Club

The club offers more than a meal. It’s an opportunity to:

  • Learn something new

  • Enjoy music

  • Share stories

  • Have a laugh

  • Feel “normal” and connected, despite the challenges that older age can sometimes bring

There is something powerful about sitting around a table, sharing conversation and feeling part of something. And yes, our volunteers are sometimes lucky enough to be offered lunch too! A small but much-appreciated perk that reflects the generosity and warmth of the group.

The Journey Matters Too

For many attendees, getting there independently would be difficult. That’s where Transport 17 plays its part. We don’t just provide transport , we provide access to friendship, routine and connection.

Our drivers and passenger assistants often know the regulars by name. There’s chatting on the bus, catching up on weekly news, and a sense of anticipation as everyone arrives together. It’s community.

At Transport 17, we’re proud to support opportunities like this that reduce isolation and strengthen our local community. Because sometimes, the most important journeys are the ones that end around a table.

To keep journeys like this possible, we are working to raise £90,000 for a new minibus to serve our growing community. If you can help please click the DONATE button here .
