How to Start Volunteering – And Why It Could Change More Than Someone Else’s Life
Many of us want to make a difference. We see stories about people who are lonely, isolated or struggling to get out and about, and we think, I’d love to help. But between work, family, hobbies and everyday life, volunteering often becomes something we’ll do “one day.”
The truth is, volunteering doesn’t have to mean giving up huge amounts of your time. Even a few hours each month can make a real difference.
At Transport 17, we see first-hand how a small act of kindness can transform someone’s week.
More than just a journey
Transport 17 provides community transport for older and more vulnerable people across South West Sheffield, helping them get to lunch clubs, social groups and activities they may otherwise be unable to attend.
For many of our passengers, it’s about much more than getting from A to B. It’s about friendship, independence and having something to look forward to.

Our volunteer drivers and passenger assistants are often the friendly faces that brighten someone’s day before they’ve even reached their destination.
“I don’t have enough time”
One of the biggest reasons people don’t volunteer is because they think they need to commit every week. The reality is very different. At Transport 17, we know everyone has different schedules. Whether you can help once a week, once a fortnight or even just occasionally, we’d love to hear from you. Every journey covered means more people can stay connected to their community.
“I’m not qualified”
Another common misconception is that you need special skills.
You don’t!!
If you’re friendly, reliable and enjoy meeting people, you already have some of the most important qualities we look for. We provide support and guidance, and our experienced volunteers are always happy to help new team members settle in.
Volunteering gives back too
While our passengers benefit enormously from the service, our volunteers often tell us they get just as much out of it.
Volunteering can:
* Build confidence.
* Help you meet new people.
* Give you a sense of purpose.
* Keep you active and engaged.
* Make you feel more connected to your local community.
Many of our volunteers say they leave each shift smiling, knowing they’ve helped someone enjoy a day they might otherwise have missed.
Is Transport 17 right for you?
If you enjoy driving, chatting with people or simply want to make a positive difference in your local community, we’d love to welcome you.
We’re always looking for volunteer:
* Minibus drivers
* Passenger assistants
* Fundraising volunteers
* People who can help behind the scenes with events and administration
Whatever your skills or experience, there’s likely to be a role where you can help.
Ready to make a difference?
You don’t have to change the world overnight.
Sometimes, helping one person get to their lunch club, seeing friends they’ve known for years and returning home with a smile is more than enough.
If you’ve been thinking about volunteering, perhaps now is the time to take that first step.
Get in touch with Transport 17 to find out more about joining our fantastic team of volunteers. Together, we can keep South West Sheffield connected, one journey at a time.
