Many of our passengers at Transport 17 are in their 80s and 90s, and one thing they often tell us is how much small acts of kindness from neighbours mean.

A quick chat, a bit of help with shopping, or simply checking in can make a huge difference to someone’s day.

Here are ten simple ways you can help an older neighbour feel supported and connected.

1. Say Hello

It sounds simple, but stopping for a quick chat can brighten someone’s day.

2. Offer to Pick Up Shopping

If you’re heading to the shops, ask if they need anything.

3. Help With Small Jobs

Changing a light bulb or putting the bins out can be difficult for older people.

4. Check In During Cold Weather

Winter can be especially tough. A quick knock on the door to check they’re warm and well can mean a lot.

5. Invite Them for a Cup of Tea

Many older people live alone. A simple invitation can help someone feel less isolated.

6. Help With Technology

Setting up a phone or tablet can help people stay connected with family.

7. Offer a Lift

Getting around isn’t always easy, which is why community transport services like Transport 17 are so important in Sheffield.

8. Share Local Information

Let neighbours know about lunch clubs, community groups or activities happening locally.

9. Be Patient and Friendly

A little patience and kindness go a long way.

10. Support Local Community Services

Charities like Transport 17 help people stay connected by providing community transport across Sheffield.
