A Day in the Life: Training for the Sheffield Half Marathon

Training for a half marathon sounds impressive. In reality, it usually starts with a slightly reluctant alarm clock, a strong cup of coffee, and the question: why did I sign up for this again?

For Jack Martin and Jack Lucas, the answer is simple – community.

Both Jacks are taking on the Sheffield Half Marathon to help Transport 17 raise £90,000 for a new community minibus. Our current vehicles help local people get to lunch clubs, social activities and community events, tackling isolation and keeping people connected. Without them, many of those journeys simply wouldn’t happen. However, our buses are aging and we need to replace one of them URGENTLY!

So what does a typical training day look like?

The Early Start

Most training runs happen before the day properly begins. While the city is still waking up, the Jacks are already out on the pavements, clocking up miles before work or at the weekend.

Some days it’s a steady run. Other days it’s hill sessions (Sheffield is not short on hills). And sometimes it’s just about getting out of the door and keeping going.

Like most runners training for a big race, there are good runs and tougher ones. But the motivation is always there.

The Why Behind the Miles

Every mile has a purpose.

The Sheffield Half Marathon is 13.1 miles long, but for the Jacks it represents something much bigger: helping Transport 17 continue to provide transport for local people who rely on it.

Our minibuses aren't just vehicles. They're a lifeline.

They take people to lunch clubs where friendships are built. They help people stay active in their community. They make sure nobody feels completely cut off.

Knowing that makes those training miles feel a little easier.

Community Support

One of the most encouraging parts of this challenge has been the support from the community.

Every donation, every message of encouragement, and every share on social media helps push the Jacks forward in their training.

Because while they’re the ones doing the running, this really is a community effort.

Race Day Is Getting Closer

As race day approaches, the training runs are getting longer and the finish line is getting closer.

The goal is simple: cross that line knowing they’ve done their part to help keep Transport 17’s wheels turning.
